The mayor of San Diego announced his support of gay marriage, and it's pretty intense. There's a lot going on here. It's interesting to contrast him against his wife... her tharn blankness versus his cracking voice. I forget sometimes what a difficult and contentious issue this is for so many people. Religion is intrinsic to the American way of life in a way that I hadn't really appreciated until this latest President Bush brought it front and centre. I had forgotten that the country was formed, really, by religious radicals, making them soldiers of their God rather than meek supplicants. Making martial their response to any perceived threat to sanctity, and provoking this intense a response in a man who is really just saying that his daughter's relationship would be as valid as his own.
