Dropping the offending purl stitch, letting it run back to the heel and then laddering it back up knitwise was exactly the right thing to do. The crochet hook is an unfamiliar instrument and the going was initially painful, but it was over in no time and the socks are now complete and very close to being identical twins. Thanks Sam!
